The Problem with CPAP
Living with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) likely means you are familiar with the Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) device, a common treatment to manage this condition. The CPAP works by delivering pressurized air through a mask to keep your airways open while you sleep.
But wearing this mask every night can be quite a task. It’s not exactly a pleasant feeling, having a mask fixed to your face, pushing air into your nose and mouth.
If you are finding it hard to stay compliant with your CPAP treatment, you are not alone. Only about 30–50% of people prescribed with a CPAP end up using it regularly; many cannot get comfortable with it. The sensation of forced air is unsettling for some users and makes them feel anxious or breathless. Not to mention the continuous humming noise can be disruptive for light sleepers or their partners.
Effective Alternative to CPAP Therapy: Precision Oral Device Therapy
If the CPAP machine is not working for you, Aragona Sleep has another option that works just as well for many patients: an oral appliance custom-made to fit you.
These mandibular advancement devices (MADs) look similar to a regular retainer, but they alter the position of your lower jaw in a way that helps you breathe better.
When you sleep, the muscles in your throat loosen up. If you have OSA, this causes your pharyngeal airway to collapse or become too narrow, making you snore or have difficulty breathing. The oral device helps by holding your jaw in a position that keeps the throat more open. By slightly moving your lower jaw forward, a MAD keeps your airway open and tongue in the right place while you sleep (so it doesn’t fall back into the throat). As a result, it eliminates the breathing interruptions (“apneas”) that are characteristic of OSA.
Many of our patients notice a reduction in snoring and an improvement in their quality of sleep almost immediately, within a couple of days. We create the precision dental device for you; it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. This personalized fit ensures that you remain at ease while your jaw is being effectively repositioned to address your apnea.
Can You Benefit From Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT)?
Recognize the signs
If you have mild to moderate sleep apnea, you are most likely a good candidate for OAT. If you haven’t received a professional diagnosis yet, consider the following symptoms to learn about your next steps:
- Feeling extremely tired and sleepy during the day
- Snoring loudly
- Stopping breathing while asleep (noticed by someone else)
- Waking up gasping or choking
- Dry mouth when you wake up
- Sore throat in the morning
- Headaches in the morning
- Trouble focusing during the day
- Feeling grumpy or quick to get angry
- High blood pressure
- Sweating a lot at night
- Trouble staying asleep
- Waking up often to use the bathroom
- Decreased sex drive
- Weight gain
- Memory problems
- Swollen legs or feet
- Feeling like your heart is beating too fast or skipping beats
- Waking up feeling like you have not slept at all
- Snorting or choking sounds during sleep
If you are experiencing two or more of these symptoms, your next step should be to consider a sleep study.
Schedule a home sleep study
At your first appointment, you will meet with Dr. Sal Aragona, DDS, who has been practicing sleep medicine for 35+ years and has helped thousands of patients say goodbye to OSA for good. Depending on your symptoms, you may get physician ordered at-home sleep study so we can better understand what is causing your sleep apnea.
These physician ordered home sleep study tests are very simple, without wires, tubs, or large machines. You simply go to sleep in your bed and wear a small device taped to your finger. While sleeping, this tiny equipment tracks your snoring (if any), oxygen levels, and heart rate. Results from sleep specialists interpretations from this test help Dr. Aragona determine if you have sleep apnea and, if you do, how serious it is.

Our Reviews
“Dr. Sal Aragona is truly a remarkable person dedicated to his craft.
I am a sleep medicine physician who himself has sleep apnea and did try CPAP. It helped me but often times I found it on the floor when I woke up. An appliance by another dentist did not fit me well and caused pain in my TMJ. Dr Aragona accepted my insurance and manufactured and tailored a device for me which really fits well and has eliminated my sleep apnea every night I sleep with it, nearly completely. I sleep well and have tremendous energy all day long running my own neurology and sleep medicine practice 70 hours a week. We send all our patients who do not tolerate CPAP to Dr. Aragona and the jaw advancement device is not for everybody. When someone is not a candidate, he has no hesitation in telling the person you are not a candidate. His office and our office seamlessly coordinate the patient care. He has even arranged some patients to get funds through charity, if the insurance did not cover and the patient is under-insured. I have not yet heard a bad word about Dr. Aragona from any patient. Thank you Dr Aragona!”
